Maldives is predominantly small Muslim country. Hence, Maldives events are very much influenced with its religion. Ramadan (known locally as rorda mas), the Islamic month of fasting is the most important religious event. Other noteworthy events are Kuda Id, the sighting of the new moon (celebrated at the end of Ramadan), and the Prophet's Birthday, which commemorates the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed.
Name of some historical events of the Maldives are:
- National Day: It is celebrated according to the Islamic calendar on the 1st of Rabee-ul Awwal. The day commemorates Muhammed Thakurufaanu's victory over the occupying Portuguese forces in 1573.
- Independence Day: Every year, 26th July is marked as the Maldivian anniversary of independence from the British in 1965.
- Republic Day: Maldives became republic for the second and last time on 11th November 1968.
- World Food Day: Maldives celebrate world food day on 16th October with the aim of preventing children around the world from going hungry.
- Fisherman’s Day: Everyear, Maldives celebrate fisherman’s day on 26th December to recognize the importance of fishing to the Maldivian economy and the livelihood of Maldivians.
